Having the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. as a Prudential Spirit of Community Award recipient was indeed a once in a lifetime experience. I am so honored and humbled to have represented Washington State and Literacy for Love. At D.C. I was able to meet 102 other State Honorees and 10 International Honorees... hearing their stories has inspired me do greater things. I cannot thank NASSP and Prudential for allowing students like me with such an wonderful opportunity to grow as a person. The opportunity to share my story with Robin Roberts of Goodmoning America, Senator Patty Murray, Senator Maria Cantwell, and students all across the nation, and the world has left me hungry to do more. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS SUPPORTED LITERACY FOR LOVE! -Leah Shin Morning Buddies is a program where we have the opportunity to mingle with the ELL/ESL students. It is a great time to have a conservation with a English Language Learner Student. It may sound scary at first talking to someone new but hey, it's going to be worth it and officers will be there guiding you if you're lost. You will meet from 7:10 am - 7:25 am in ROOM C106 (Ms. Sebby's room) (and yes 15 min is plenty enough time to have a conservation, play a game, help them with their homework, or etc.) Below is the link for an online sign-up for the Morning Buddies Program. You'll be asked for your email so we can send you a reminder for the days you signed up! Its a great experience and I encourage all of you to sign-up! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4fada622a5f94-eslell Big thank you to Officer Indira Rayala for helping to organize Morning Buddies. The new year means new projects. Literacy for Love has partnered with student-led community organization: Opportunist Youth of America (OYA). OYA has helped us find locations that are in need of educational resources and will be helping us deliver the first wave of Books for You distribution. *A updated list of the locations we have reached will be up shortly* Literacy for Love has created, Book Bags to hand out to English Language Learner programs and Food Banks in the Issaquah area. With the help of Literacy for Love members, we were able to create 200 book bags. In each bag contains 8-10 children, teen, and young adult books and attached to the bag a encouraging Literacy Movement challenge. The Challenge: "Join the Literacy for Love Movement This bag and everything inside is officially yours! The Literacy for Love team would love to see what books were your favorite. Take a photo and use the hashtag: #lit4lovebooksforyou or email us a photo. *Your book may be featured on our website." We encourage everyone to accept this challenge... Let's spread the love for literacy! Our next Books for You distribution will be closer to home where we will be donating to local Everett Public Schools English Language Learner Programs and handing out book bags at Lynwood Food Bank. Click here to see photo album of book bag stuffing: here Literacy for Love had a great time making cards for the English Language Learner students at Henry M. Jackson at our very last meeting. There are over twenty amazing students who are currently enrolled in the program and Jackson is truly lucky to have them be a part of our student body. With the help and guidance from the English Language Learner teacher Ms. Sebby, Literacy for Love was able to find books to match specific students reading levels on a (1-4 scale). This was a great experience for Literacy for Love as they received a great opportunity to understand how important certain reading levels are for students. The Literacy for Love team made sure to attach a candy cane, greeting card personalized with their name, and wrapped two-three books that were at their reading level to spread the holiday cheer. Literacy for Love is taking the first steps to promote Literacy over winter break! |
