Our Story
Literacy for Love is a newly established club at Henry M. Jackson High School becoming official in October of 2013. The founders are Henry M. Jackson High School Alumni’s, Leah Shin and Suman Kaur. They are ordinary girls who want to change the world with the power of books.
The roots of this club was planted by Leah, having been placed in English Language Learner class when she was in elementary school. This was a requirement for all students who spoke a second language at home. She watched her peers struggle to read basic words as they immigrated from Latin America, Asia, and other countries. With a little research, statistic showed that “there's 1 book available for every 300 families that live in low-income communities in just the United States. In 3rd world countries they are facing almost triple amount of families dealing with this same problem." Knowing such heartbreaking facts they set a goal to:
- Improve the interest in reading
- Increase in both children, teen, and adults the desire to learn
- Increase reading in homes
- Increase educational opportunities
-To be the change
This is driving Literacy for Love to help provide the educational resources homes and schools are in need of. Books genuinely can change the path of someone’s life.
Literacy for Love represents students who are willing to dedicate their time and share their love to make the community not only a better place but a literate one.
All it takes to become a Literacy for Love member is: heart, books, and sharing your knowledge for the world.
