Community Projects
These are brief descriptions of major community projects that we hope to accomplish this year:
Books for Love:
is a project where Literacy for Love has hopes to organize a local book drive for families and students who are underprivileged to own their own copies of books. Our goal is to network other school's, well known book stores such as: UW Bookstore, Barnes and Nobles, Half Price Books, etc. and to partner with our local Sno-isle library. Our set goal was 3,000 books and we were able to collect over 6,000 books, which is worth approximately $50,000. 60% of books will be donated to local school's in our community that are in need of this resource and the other 40% will be used for Packages for Love. |
Big Brother & Big Sister program:
The collection of books from project Books for Love will then help us move forward. Literacy for Love is working on partnering up with Penny Creek Elementary School IEP Classrooms. These are students who are in need of a older high school mentor who are able to be a positive role model. |
Club members will:
1. Have sessions to get to know their "little brother or little sister". 2. Provide gently used books for them to keep. 3. Have sessions to read, teach, and educate them through the English language. 4. Host a end of a year party. 5. Form a bond with their "little brother or little sister". |
Cards for Love
is a program where Literacy for Love has hopes to make holiday cards and birthday cards for veterans, community homeless shelters, book banks in different languages. We want to put inspiring quotes in cards and make that person feel special. This idea was polished by Jackson's Vice Principal Ms. Young who suggested that we take action. The effects of homelessness are different for each person. Children who experience homelessness are more likely to experience hunger, get sick, and miss school than other children. |
Book Banks
is a program where Literacy for Love is establishing the nation's first "book bank", where we are partnering with local food banks. This is an opportunity where families are able to pick up a bag of food and in addition a bag of books (from Books for Love) with a homemade card (Cards for Love) to take home this holiday season. Currently we are partnered with International Food Bank and Lynwood Food Bank. |
